The coolest spy gadgets

Many of us have been hugely impressed by spy movies over the years, and have perhaps fantasised about being the great James Bond. If you’ve ever imagined you were being dropped behind enemy lines in a bid to find the whereabouts of a secret double agent, which spy gadgets have you ever considered using? Here are a few that might have come in useful.

Is it a pen? Is it a gun? No, it’s a light sabre!

Top of my wanted list would be a pen that transforms into something more dangerous in times of danger. While 007’s trusty writing implement turned into a gun, I’d like mine to become a light sabre. Needless to say, it would have to have that satisfying thrummmm noise as it opens, and it would enable me to get the better of a whole army of black-clad enemies who are trying to turn me into an ex-spy.

In a hurry? Head for the Teleportmobile

While slightly inferior secret agents like to drive cars that can deflect bullets, negotiate sheet ice and fire rear-mounted cannons, mine would be able to go one step further. Or should I say one dimension further? I want my car to have the ability to teleport itself from one location to another in an instant. Therefore, if I am being chased by a group of hover-boarding mercenaries on the outskirts of Moscow, I want to press a button on the dashboard and to suddenly be gliding elegantly along a deserted highway with a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean.

My multi-functioned wristwatch can do anything

To the untrained eye, my watch would look just like any other, but in reality it will be so much more. In fact, it will be something of a Swiss Army watch, with dozens of useful functions. It will be able to operate as, among many other things, a mobile phone, a camera, an Internet provider, a sat-nav system and a DVD player, just in case I get bored. It will also, on good days, be able to tell me the time.

Instant translation spectacles

I also want a pair of glasses that provide instant translations to anything people are saying to me. They will feature a small screen at the bottom of the lens. That way, when I’m talking to two suspicious characters and one of them says he wants to kill me in Russian, I will know all about it.

David Rice is a UK-based writer who has watched far too many movies. Of all the spy gadgets currently available, covert voice recorders are his favourite.
